Selina Scott and Anna Ford hold their own against leggy lovelies at radio awards

May 11, 2010

As the stars gathered in London for an awards ceremony honouring success in radio, there emerged two distinct approaches to fashion from the ladies, all of whom had dressed to impress.

Some members of the fairer sex dared to bare more in short frocks, including Lisa Snowdon and The Saturday's Frankie Sandford.

But they had stiff competition in the style stakes from the likes of Anna Ford and Selina Scott who chose less revealing ensembles for the Sony Radio Academy awards event.

Her contemporary Selina chose a black sheer kaftan-style outfit with fringe detailing and embellishment.

Indeed her black and white ensemble seemed to set the tone of the night with stars like Kate Silverton, Claudia Winkleman and Lauren Laverne all stepping out in monochrome dresses.

Radio 1's Zane Lowe picked up two awards, while Scott Mills, Trevor Nelson and Bono were also successful – the latter won the best music special for a poetic homage to Elvis Presley.

Former newsreader Anna looked particularly elegant in a beautiful turquoise kimono set which took centre stage when she presented Sir David Attenborough with the Speech Broadcaster of the Year award at the bash.

The graceful pair were surrounded by other ladies preferring to cover up, including fashionable Fearne Cotton, 28, who chose a demure floor-length maxi dress.

Meanwhile, winners at the awards went to presenters including Jarvis Cocker – named best rising star – and Johnny Vaughan whose Capital breakfast show won best entertainment programme.

Big winner on the night, Sir David Attenborough, was particularly delighted. "Television, ladies and gentlemen, is a doddle," he told the star-studded audience. "If you have birds of paradise and gorillas, it’s a doddle. "Television is easy – radio terrifies me. I think it is extraordinarily difficult so my congratulations to you all who work with it."
