Elton John and David Furnish become ‘proud and happy parents’ to little boy

December 28, 2010

It has been a very special Christmas for Elton John and David Furnish. On December 25, the couple welcomed a son they have named Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John.The little boy was born via surrogate in California weighing 7lbs 15 oz.

"We are overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment,” Elton, 62, and David, 48, said in a joint statement.“Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents.

The pair - married in 2005 after 12 years together - shared the happy news with US magazine.com.

They said that out of respect for the surrogate mother’s privacy they would not be releasing further information relating to the surrogacy arrangement.

Elton and David have previously made their desire to become fathers known - last year they failed in an adoption bid to become parents to an orphan in the Ukraine.Little Zachary is the first child for both. Their son’s middle name, Levon, is believed to be a reference to Elton’s 1971 song of the same name.

One indicator that the musician was ready to embrace fatherhood came in November when he announced his retirement from the music business. And also speaking last month, David said the couple were waiting to start a family until Elton has finished on the road.

"We don’t want to put the raising of children into the hands of nannies and housekeepers,” he told a US publication.“We want to be active parents. We have godchildren and kids we support in Africa, so we’re fine.”
