The shade was almost the same, but the outfits couldn't have been more different. Two years ago Madonna faced criticism when she arrived at the New York Costume Institute Gala in an Eighties-inspired Louis Vuitton outfit – complete with 'bunny ears'.
But this year she was nothing short of stunning. The Material Girl was simply dazzling in a teal-hued silk Stella McCartney gown embroidered with delicate sequin stars. With her blonde hair falling over her shoulders in soft waves, and her lips scarlet red, the 52-year-old was a Twenties goddess. The look was a resounding success with commentators, who weren't bowled over by her 2009 ensemble. Many thought the turquoise ruched mini-dress, which was teamed with knee high black boots and that quirky hair-piece, didn't work.
Not that Madonna – queen of controversy – has ever really cared what people think of her choices. Style critics were also divided on her Oscars look this year - a see-through lace number which she wore with fishnet tights and a fur-effect body warmer. And she pushed the envelope with another Luis Vuitton outfit in 2008 – a green feathered minidress.
