Cannes 2011: 'Pirates' crew sail into town and Penelope goes for the chop

May 16, 2011

After uber glam appearances in LA and London to launch Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Penelope Cruz pulled out all the stops for the film's grand opening in Cannes. The Spanish siren looked breathtaking in a show-stopping Marchesa gown, featuring sparkling embroidery and a train of flowing tulle.

Not only that - she was showing off a sleek new 'do. Her brunette mane had been trimmed and teased into a chic pony, and her delicate features were framed by a feathered fringe. The 37-year-old joined Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and her other co stars on the red carpet in the French Riviera. After the unveiling they moved on to an afterparty at Cannes' upmarket Cap D'Antibes Hotel, for which Penelope changed into a slinky LBD. Earlier – and pre-haircut – she attended a photocall with the Pirates crew, to huge cheers and applause. Wearing a navy blue Stella McCartney dress that clung to her curves, Penelope scored another style ace.

After the appearance, she removed her vertiginous heels for the boat trip back to her hotel with her co-stars, and almost left the shoes behind. A member of the security team noticed them, however – and handed the navy blue stilettoes back.

In the swashbuckling adventure Penelope plays lady pirate Angelica, the daughter of Blackbeard – who is portrayed by Ian McShane.

Her character is also an old flame of Captain Jack Sparrow – Johnny's infamous alter ego.

The actress - mum to three-month-old Leo – was pregnant during filming. She did take part in action scenes but said the cast and crew were careful to make sure she was kept safe the entire time. Her sister Monica also acted as a body double in some of the scenes.
