As the unofficial start to summer, the holiday is celebrated across the US with picnics, parties and beach time. Spending the day with loved ones seems to be just what the mother of four needed, but she certainly didn’t forget the reason the day is celebrated in the first place.

"This weekend, I'm thinking of all who gave their life, and all the families who lost a loved one, in service to this great country," she tweeted. She added: "On this #MemorialDay, when so many are grieving in obscurity or silence, let's keep that in mind. Be kind so many people are grieving." Maria wasn’t the only one out in the sunshine. Famous faces headed out in droves to spend time with their kids or even with each other at a Memorial Day party in Malibu.
