Caring Mel tends to sick youngsters in Guatemala

June 9, 2011

Actor Mel Gibson was scheduled to clock up 16 hours voluntary work as part of his community service order. But the Hollywood star ended doing much more, so charmed was he by the staff and particularly the young patients he met at the San Juan De Dios General Hospital in Guatemala.

Mel spoke with youngsters and cradled a tiny baby at the facility, which he visited with charity Mending Kids International. The 55-year-old star has had a long association with the organisation – and his ex-wife Robyn was involved with them for 15 years. Their aim is help provide free surgery for children in Central America with cleft lips or spina bifida. While Mel was on a humanitarian mission, back home there were developments in the ongoing custody case concerning his 20-month-old daughter Lucia.

Lawyers for the actor's former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva are taking action to try and get one of Mel's lawyers disqualified from the case. The legal team have made the request as Oksana says she consulted with the firm now representing Mel back in 2008 over a custody issue relating to the son she has with 007 actor Timothy Dalton. Mel had put her in touch with the firm of the firm of Kolodny and Anteau, who are now working for him.

Can Hollywood's former blue-eyed boy earn redemption?
