In their own words: How St Andrews worked its magic on Elizabeth and Shane

Britain's most fabulous divorcée is officially off the market. Elizabeth Hurley's companion Shane Warne proposed to her the Scottish town of St Andrews after a 10-month courtship.

The 42-year-old former Australian Test cricketer presented the glamorous brunette with an eye-popping sapphire said to be worth £50,000.Elizabeth, 46, and her son Damian had been watching him take part in the Alfred Dunhill Links pro-am golf championship. Organisers of the tournament said in a statement that he asked for her hand over a romantic meal before celebrating with guests and VIPs, including her ex Hugh Grant and Michael Douglas, in the Old Course Hotel. After reports that the engagement had actually taken place in full view of diners, Shane tweeted a series of messages, emphasising that was far from being the case.

"I didn't propose in front of 200 people at dinner. It was done privately and was very romantic – if I say so myself Ps left knee is sore !!! "Thanks so much again for all your kind messages, they mean a lot.. EH & I very happy and have had a beautiful lazy day today.. "Thanks for all your congratulations. Here's a pic of us about to go to Dunhill dinner in St Andrews.

She also shared the picture of the couple smartly dressed for their evening out, tweeting: "Thanks for all your congratulations. "In it her eyes are shining with happiness, and her fiancé looks pleased as punch.   It will be Elizabeth's second marriage. Her four-year union with businessman Arun Nayar ended in a divorce in the High Court in London in June.Damian, nine, is from her relationship with American film producer Steve Bing.Shane has three children Brooke, Summer and Jackson with his ex-wife Simone Callahan.
