Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber sweep the board at MTV Awards

November 7, 2011

A host of the music industry's most bankable boys and girls swept into chilly Belfast and injected some serious heat for MTV's Europe Music Awards. Rockers Coldplay gave a thundering opening as they sang new track Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall from their new album. Once the show was well and truly underway, Justin Bieber led the charge for the boys by winning gongs for Best Male and Best Pop. The Baby singer is embroiled in claims that he fathered a secret love child during a brief backstage tryst with fan Mariah Yeater, 20.

But he put his paternity scandal to one side as he performed onstage before posing proudly with his awards. Justin's sweetheart, Disney star Selena Gomez, was also at the ceremony, but the pair opted to take some snaps for Twitter backstage with David Hasselhoff rather than pose on the red carpet. The brunette was kept busy with her hosting duties and a series of glamorous costume changes. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga was the star of the night as she dominated the show both on and offstage.

Her incredible set saw the quirky singer and her troupe of dancers strutting their stuff across a futuristic moon set. Gaga whipped her high ponytail around as she dazzled in blood-red disc dress. She later changed costumes to pick up one the four awards she won on the night. Her latest tune, Born This Way won best song and Gaga was clearly proud.

"I knew that this was very special when I wrote it, and I didn't know when I first started out as a songwriter how special it would be." she said "It's the most important single to me." Fellow pop princess Katy Perry was named Best Live Act and paid homage to her fans’ "commitment" as she accepted her gong. Other performers on the night included Jessie J , who took to the stage in an emotional tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. "She inspired so many of us," she told the crowd.
