With her dedication to humanitarian causes and six children, Angelina Jolie is famous for her altruism. But her life wasn't always so positive and, in a rare acknowledgement of her wild past, the actress has opened up about her "dark and dangerous" youth. Speaking to CBS News, the Hollywood heavyweight revealed: "I went through heavier, darker times and I survived them. I didn't die young. "People can imagine that I did the most dangerous (things), and I did the worst... For many reasons, I shouldn't be here."

The comments come as the one-time bad girl was quizzed for the show 60 Minutes, in an interview that will be broadcast on Sunday. Before finding a soulmate in Brad Pitt, Angelina lived a turbulent Hollywood existence and was married twice. Her first union was to Trainspotting actor Jonny Lee Miller, where her bridal look consisted of skin-tight rubber trousers and a white silk blouse with the groom's name daubed across it  –  in what was though to be her own blood.

When their marriage ended shortly after, Angelina found romance with Billy Bob Thornton who famously said: "I like outcasts of society. I've felt like one myself. Still do.” The couple enjoyed an intense and alternative relationship, with both of them wearing vials of the other's blood around their neck in a "romantic" gesture. Nowadays, though, the über-mum is transformed, saying her dark side still exists and is reserved for one special person. "I still have that side of me...it's just in its place now...it belongs to Brad, or...our adventures."
