Meryl Streep wins fans' vote with her 'human' portrayal of PM

January 5, 2012

Over the last few months Meryl Streep has slipped into the skin of Margaret Thatcher for the new biopic, The Iron Lady. And the collected demeanour of Britain's former premier had clearly rubbed off on her as she glided gracefully through the excitement of the film's European debut.

Meryl was clearly thrilled to have had the chance to play such an important role. Speaking of the film, she said: "I consider all the roles I play a privilege but this one was special because there are such vehement opinions about her.""People seemed to look at her as an icon or a monster and I just wanted to locate the human being inside those caricatures that we've seen over so many years. "And to investigate myself what it must have been like for her."

Inside, she posed with Jim Broadbent, who plays her on-screen husband, Denis Thatcher. The pair will, no doubt, be anxious to see if the film will be able to live up to the buzz it has caused so far. With the performance from the leading lady already being tipped for an Oscar, and praise for the film's sartorial authenticity already secured, they may not have much to worry about. "It would be great, because the secret of the nomination is that it comes from the actors and actors are the ones who know what you go through. So it would be amazing," the Hollywood veteran said of her Oscar tip.
