Ricky Gervais says 'never again' to hosting Golden Globes

January 18, 2012

Ricky Gervais has said he never wants to host the Golden Globes again after describing it as "like a parachute jump". The comic, who recently hosted the awards for the third time, caused controversy last year with a series of close to the bone remarks about some of Hollywood's biggest names. This year he came under fire from critics for not being funny enough, with one writing his performance "felt forced and heavy-handed".

Maureen Ryan from The Huffington Post said: 'If Gervais doesn't get invited back in 2013, it might be because he was so boring Sunday night. "After weeks of media speculation about what Gervais would do, Gervais' performance as host was decidedly anti-climactic and underwhelming. Its general mediocrity gave the ceremony as a whole a certain deflated quality," she added. The Los Angeles Times said he was "surprisingly subdued" while the Hollywood Reporter said the ceremony was "such a let down".Writing on his blog, Ricky said he had "a blast" but did not want to do it again. "I've told my agent to never let me be persuaded to do it again though. It's like a parachute jump. You can only really enjoy it in retrospect when you realise you didn't die and it was quite an amazing thing to do."

Ricky, who found fame as the star and co-creator of the BBC sitcom The Office, said the crowd "were great this year too". He said: "I think they finally worked out that my gags only seemed rude and nasty but were actually not too scary at all. Or they were just drunker."
