Battle of the blondes: Hollywood beauties line up to play Princess Diana

February 10, 2012

Fans have waited for years for a biopic about the tragic people's Princess Diana of Wales. But their wait is over as two movies have come along at once. Recently confirmed to portray the late royal is Naomi Watts, who will star in Caught in Flight later this year.

But Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel's film starring the Oscar-nominated actress is likely to have some competition after it goes into production later this year. There is another picture in the works. And Iron Lady producer Stephen Evans is rumoured to be mulling over Charlize Theron or Carey Mulligan for the challenging role. While Naomi's film will explore Diana's relationship with the heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, the contender will be based on the 2009 book Diana: Closely Guarded Secret.

The memoir was written by her former protection officer, Inspector Ken Wharfe, and gives a personal insight into the highs and lows of their time working together in the years before Diana's divorce. Ewan McGregor is expected to play the man Princes William and Harry came to call "Uncle Ken"."The emphasis on this really is authenticity and to discover what she went through" Stephen told The Mirror. "Unless you are a Diana freak, quite a lot of it will be unknown to the audience".
