One of the last declarations from the Grande Dame of Hollywood was unequivocal – "No one is going to play Elizabeth Taylor, but Elizabeth Taylor herself". So it would be interesting to know how the late actress would have reacted to the news that Lindsay Lohan will portray her in a new film.
The Mean Girls star has landed the plum lead for Liz and Dick – a television production that will recount the movie goddess' passionate romance with husband Richard Burton, whom she married twice.
It could be a career renaissance for the troubled starlet, whose early promise in Disney films has been threatened by tumultuous drama in recent months.
Like Lindsay, Elizabeth, also a child star who shot to fame in National Velvet, was no stranger to the temptations and trappings of the Tinseltown lifestyle. With seven husbands, two Oscars and a colossal jewel collection as dazzling as her estimated $600 million dollar fortune, any portrayal will require energy and charisma. Despite the challenge, 25-year-old Lindsay is confident in her abilities, saying she is "honoured" to play the icon.
And producers at Lifetime Network gave the casting their approval, adding: "We are thrilled Lindsay will portray beloved Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor." Cameras are set to start rolling in early June.
