After taking a starring role at the Diamond Jubilee concert, Sir Paul McCartney has another high-profile gig this summer. The former Beatles star has confirmed he will end the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games on July 27."I've been booked!" he told BBC Radio 5 Live, adding that he would be "closing the opening".
A performance by the 69-year-old star has long been rumoured, and in January he disclosed he was in talks about taking part.
The full line-up of the opening ceremony has yet to be announced, but it is intended to showcase the very best of the host nation. It will feature a parade involving all the competing countries and, of course, the entrance of the Olympic flame, which is currently on its journey around the UK.
Some 15,000 people will take part in the Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremony, watched by an estimated four billion worldwide. Despite a 50-year career in the music industry, Sir Paul told BBC Radio 5 that on "certain occasions" he still get nervous ahead of a performance. No doubt that will include his two historic headlining appearances this summer.
