Starting with cocktails at a landmark New York hotel, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas had a very stylish joint birthday celebration this week. The two stars were both born on September 25 – albeit 25 years apart. As befits Hollywood royalty, Catherine, 43, was dazzling in an elegant black dress that served as the backdrop for some eye-socking jewellery, including two diamond sparklers, diamond earrings and an impressive emerald ring.
The finishing touch to her chic outfit was a pair of distinctive red-soled Louboutin heels. After cocktail hour at the Carlyle on Madison Avenue, the couple, who have been married 12 years in November, went on to the home of legendary journalist Barbara Walters for dinner with a small group of friends. A few years ago Catherine and Michael moved back from the Bahamas because of their children Dylan, 12, and Carys, nine.
Their son is dyslexic and his parents felt the specialist programmes in the Big Apple would help him. While they've forgone the relative anonimity they enjoyed in the Caribbean, the family seems to be loving city life.
And the children especially thrive in New York's showbiz environment. "Gene-wise, they're both very theatrical, very animated, funny show people," the Welsh beauty told a US magazine. "People come up to me and say it: 'You can tell whose kids they are'."
