Their usual glam frocks and dapper red carpet attire were left at home as fun loving celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Christina Aguilera and Stacy Keibler donned wigs, face paint and fancy dress outfits for the spookiest holiday of the year. Reality TV star Kim made a splash with her mermaid costume, complete with sparkly fish tail, shell bikini, and long wavy blonde hair, à la Daryl Hannah in Splash. The wig, which apparently cost $2,000 and was made from real human hair went down a treat with her boyfriend Kanye West, who was dressed as a ship's captain.

“Kanye kept bragging to their friends how beautiful Kim looked and that he loved her being a blonde,” said a source at the New York party they attended. Meanwhile Christina found her knight in shining armour in the form of her beau Matthew Rutler. The singer appeared to be a raunchy queen of the castle, with fishnets, thigh high boots, a ripped body suit and a white crown atop a mountain of frizzy pink hair. Stepping out solo – without boyfriend George Clooney – Stacy was on hosting duty at a masquerade party in Las Vegas. The former WWF westler looked gorgeous as ever in a black strapless dress and delicate mask. And giving her look an extra Halloween twist was her bright green manicure. Other stars getting involved in the frightful fun included Hillary Duff, who was almost unrecognisable under face paint which transformed her into a scary senorita for the Mexican Day of the Dead. Jessica Alba, along with her husband Cash Warren and their daughter Honor made a heroic effort for Gwen Stefani's Halloween bash. The trio stepped out as The Incredibles – from the Disney movie – a look rocked by Mariah Carey and her family in the past. Four-year-old Honor was behind the costume choice, but the little girl took a while to decide what the family – minus baby Haven, who stayed at home – should wear.

The Sin City star told celeb site Wetpaint: "She keeps changing her mind. She wanted to be Mary Weather [from Dexter’s Laboratory] for a long time, but now I think she wants to be – I don’t even know what she wants to be – someone superhero. Maybe from The Incredibles?"Gwen's party was held at her California beach house and the host and her husband Gavin Rossdale dressed as vampires. Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas looked purr-fect for a spooky night out in a skin tight leopard print leotard. She completed the look with a tail and a pair of ears, and a pair of towering stilettoes. The singer shared the costume with her Twitter followers with the caption: "Getting excited 4 #Halloween! HEEeeRE naughty kitty kitty..." Other stars getting into the spirit of the spooky holiday included Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio – who commanded attention as a sexy general - Paris Hilton, aka Alice in Wonderland and Vanessa Hudgens, who was a swashbuckling pirate.
