Heidi Klum cancels Halloween bash after devastation of Superstorm Sandy

October 31, 2012

Halloween is the highlight of Heidi Klum's year. But after the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy on the East Coat of America, the German supermodel has cancelled the annual Big Apple party she hosts to celebrate the spooky holiday.Heidi tweeted her followers about the change of plan, writing: "Hope you and your loved ones are are safe after the storm. Cancelling my Halloween party...postponing to a haunted Christmas."

A picture accompanied the tweet of the blonde beauty wrapped up against the elements in a quilted coat, beanie hat and wellington boots. She appeared to be standing on a rain-lashed New York street.

Superstorm Sandy has claimed the lives of 50 people and caused between $30-50 billion worth of damage on the East Coast. More than eight million homes were left without power and President Barack Obama declared it a "major disaster". The US leader was due to visit New Jersey on Wednesday with the state's Governor Chris Christie to tour the ravaged coastline site by helicopter.

The mum-of-four was due to be on hosting duty at Finale nightclub on Halloween night, October 31. She even had her costume sorted – and had tweeted a preview to fans.

With a huge golden headpiece adding feet to her height, and a tight golden dress and wing style cape, Heidi was due to be Cleopatra – the last great ruler of ancient Egypt. The gorgeous costume would surely have been a talking point at her party, which she has hosted annually for the last 13 years.

The impressive outfit was made by designer Martin Izquierdo, who can be seen in a video detailing the making of the costume which the mum-of-four has posted on her website. In it, she tells him she wants it to be: "Big. Bold. Glittery."

The design team also made a mask of Heidi's face so they can cover it in Swarovski crystals for a truly glittering effect. But fans will now have to wait for Christmas to see the finished effect – unless she decides to get a new costume put together.Heidi writes in the introduction to the video: "The making of my costume is quite an elaborate process. It takes months of planning and a team of expert designers to put it all together. Costume designer Martin Izquierdo has been creating my costumes for me for years. He's amazing!"The mum-of-four would have attended her party solo for the first time in about east eight years without her musician husband Seal in tow. The pair split in January after admitting they had "grown apart".Seal used to love dressing up for Halloween as much as his wife. Last year he donned a monkey suit so their pair could be a pair of playful primates. In previous years he has joined her in being a crow and a futuristic robot.
