Tom Cruise looked to have gone back to his action man roots on the set of his new film All You Need Is Kill this week. After spending some time with his daughter Suri for Thanksgiving, the rejuvenated actor was firing on all cylinders as he took over London's Trafalgar Square while shooting scenes for the sci-fi thriller.
Tom plays a soldier battling aliens in the flick, and, extra-terrestrials notwithstanding, his action scene involving a helicopter and RAF uniform was reminiscent of Top Gun, the cult film which made his name. The high-energy fun would have made it easier to return to work after spending precious time with little Suri. The youngster flew to the UK from her home in New York to spend Thanksgiving with her dad whilst mum Katie Holmes visited her parents' house. With Tom on location in London, his busy schedule has made it difficult to see his daughter since the summer when they enjoyed a fun-filled day out at Disney World, Florida. As a result, both would have made the most of Suri's visit for the celebrated American holiday. It was a delicate time for the family, who were marking their first Thanksgiving since Tom and Katie called time on their six-year marriage. Across the pond, Dawson's Creek actress Katie was seen arriving at New York's LaGuarda airport alone as she headed west to spend time with her parents Kathleen and Martin in Toledo, Ohio.
Mum-of-one Katie – who is currently starring in the Broadway production, Dead Accounts – was looked after by her family. She revealed that her lawyer-father began an alternative Thanksgiving tradition - a three mile run called the ''Turkey Trot'. "Many years ago, my dad started this tradition where we all do this run in the local park" Katie said, "there's even a prize, which I haven't won yet but it's really fun." The actress has secured full custody of young Suri in the wake of her headline-dominating divorce case from Tom, and as she cultivates her new, independent life, her daughter is now a pupil at the elite $39,750-per-year Avenues School, which has campuses around the world in case youngsters need to follow their globetrotting parents to other countries.
For his part, Tom continues to consolidate his legacy as an A-list action man and one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. Despite the turmoil in his personal life, he can take comfort in the fact that, career-wise, things couldn't be better. In July the actor topped a list of Hollywood's highest earning stars. He earned $75 million in the period between May 2011-May 2012 and his fortune was significantly swelled by his appearance in the latest Mission Impossible film Ghost Protocol - which made more than $700 million worldwide. Tom will be hoping All You Need Is Kill can achieve the same success.
