Golden Globes 2013: Brit hopes rest with Daniel Day-Lewis and Helen Mirren following nominations

December 13, 2012

On Thursday afternoon, the Golden Globes unveiled their nominations for the films and actors that captivated in 2012. The roll call continues to stoke award season fervour, which began with the Screen Actors Guild announcements the previous day. Great British hopes rest securely on the shoulders of two of the country's finest actors – Daniel Day-Lewis and Dame Helen Mirren.

Daniel is in the running thanks to his stint in American Civil War biopic, Lincoln. The brooding English-Irish actor was already given the nod in the Screen Actors Guild best male category, and his epic performance as the 16th President of the United States has earned him a double coup.   Dame Helen Mirren may also add another cross to her Golden Globe bow. This time, she is flying the home flag after playing Alfred Hitchcock's strong-willed wife in Hitchcock. Having been put forward for the role, she now lays the foundation for her fourth Golden Globe, which she last snared in 2007 for her work on The Queen. Fellow Dame Judi Dench is also taking a bow. Judi is set for recognition after starring in Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The British comedy romp, which also stars Bill Nighy, has been making waves.

Meanwhile, singer Adele rounds out home-grown talent after she and producer Paul Epworth lit up the soundtrack section with their soaring James Bond theme, Skyfall.   Heavyweight film productions set to be decorated include the celluloid adaptation of Les Miserables, lost-soul romance Silver Linings Playbook and Iranian hostage thriller Argo. Each secured four SAG nominations for best film ensemble and will now thrash it out for Golden Globes, and possibly Oscar, glory.    On the small screen, the quintessentially British costume drama Downton Abbey could continue its success across the pond – last year the show took home the Golden Globe for best television mini-series and now has an opportunity to continue its winning streak. CIA thriller Homeland, crime drama Breaking Bad and newcomer The Newsroom all provide stiff competition.

All winners will be revealed when the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony takes place on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013.
