There was no mistaking Naomi Watts' joy as the actress was pictured in New York, shortly after learning she has been nominated at the Golden Globes in the Best Actress category for her role as a real-life survivor of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in The Impossible. Naomi was told on by her agent, who wrang in the morning on Thursday. And the good news made the day a cause for double celebration, as it was also the fourth birthday of her son Samuel, known as Kai.
The blonde star said she gave out "a yelp" when she found out, startling her little boy. "It's my son's birthday today. He's upset that I made that yelp. I had to explain what it was. Mommy got good news. And he said, 'It's my birthday.'
We're having cake after school. It's all about Kai today. I won't get to celebrate until this weekend." The actress stayed true to her word – she was snapped on the way to a family celebration with Kai and his brother Alexander 'Sasha', five, and partner Liev Schreiber.
Kai was certainly the king of the day, wearing a red crown with his name and the number four written on it. Naomi is just one of several stars who spoke of their joy at being put forward when Golden Globes nominations were announced on Thursday. Director Quentin Tarantino was delighted to be shortlisted in three categories - Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture Drama - for his new Western, Django Unchained.
He said: "It's very gratifying to get this many nominations from the HFPA (the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) for a film I worked so hard on and am so passionate about. I look forward to having fun at the Golden Globes with my castmates and fellow nominees. "Scoring two nods was Nicole Kidman – Best Supporting Actress for Paperboy and Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries for Hemingway and Gellhorn.
The grateful actress said: "As an actor you look for roles that are rich, complicated, and that stretch you and this year I was blessed to find two. To have the chance to play them was a gift in itself and to then be acknowledged this way is icing on the cake. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press!"Winners of the coveted trophies will be revealed when the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony takes place on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013. British hopes rest securely on the shoulders of two of the country's finest actors – Daniel Day-Lewis and Dame Helen Mirren, nominated for roles in the American Civil War biopic, Lincoln and Hitchcock.
