US film Lincoln beat British contenders in the BAFTA nominations on Wednesday morning, scoring a total of ten nods. Steven Spielberg's presidential biopic scored in five of the major categories. These include one for Daniel Day-Lewis - nominated for the Best Actor award for his performance in the title role of Lincoln - the US president who led his country through the Civil War. He is up against stars including Ben Affleck, put forward for his role in Argo, Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables' leading man, Bradley Cooper – star of Silver Linings Playbook, and Joaquin Phoenix for his role in The Master.

Following closely behind were homegrown films Les Miserables – scoring nine in total – and Skyfall, with eight. Dame Judi Dench is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Spymaster M in the new Bond film, and Javier Bardem's performance as Bond villain Raoul Silva has landed him a Best Supporting Actor nod along with other big names including Tommy Lee Jones. 007 himself Daniel Craig missed out in the Best Actor category, however, and there was no mention of filmmaker Sam Mendes for Best Director.

Judi will face competition from Anne Hathaway who is nominated in the big screen version of Les Miserables for her role as Fantine, for which she chopped off her long locks. Dame Helen Mirren is nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Hitchcock - playing the wife of the famous filmmaker.

Skyfall has also been put forward for Outstanding British Film and Original Music - a nod to Adele who provided the hit Bond theme of the same name. The film also picks up nods for Cinematography, Editing, Production Design and Sound. Also scoring in nine categories was Life Of Pi, which picked up nods for Best Director, Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. Quentin Tarantino is nominated for Director and Original Screenplay for his western Django Unchained and one of its stars, Christoph Waltz, is nominated for Supporting Actor. TV star Dexter Fletcher is nominated for an Outstanding Debut award - with his co-writer Danny King - for their work on Wild Bill. There were just three technical nominations for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, in Makeup and Hair, Sound and Special Visual Effects. The nominations were read out on Wednesday morning by Jeremy Irvine and Alice Eve in London, the day before the Oscar nominations were due to be revealed in LA. The BAFTA winners will be announced in a ceremony at the Royal Opera House hosted by Stephen Fry on Sunday, February 10.
