'Downton's Michelle Dockery leads UK hope for Golden Globe glory

January 13, 2013

British actress Michelle Dockery swapped afternoon tea at Downton Abbey for BAFTA's glitzy Awards Season Tea Party on Saturday. Michelle was seen flying the flag for UK acting talent at the event in Los Angeles ahead of Sunday night's Golden Globe awards; where she hopes to scoop the title of Best Actress in a TV Drama. The London-born star looked stylish in a monochrome dress and pointed metallic heels as well as showing her off her enviably sleek bob hairstyle. Michelle was joined at the Four Seasons Hotel by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes whose hit period drama could lead Britain to Golden Globe success.

This is not  the first time Michelle's role as Lady Mary Crawley has earned her talent stateside recognition; in September she was joined in the US by Joanne Froggatt for the 64th Emmy Awards. Whilst the ladies failed to take home awards for themselves Downton's popularity across the pond was proved through its 16 nominations.Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jon Bon Jovi, Sally Field and Hugh Jackman as well as other Golden Globe nominees also celebrated their good fortune with a cup of tea. They were the guests of honour at the party where guests were invited to mingle and enjoy sandwiches and scones. The pre-Globes event was among many around the city and one of three held at the hotel alone. The nominees have been hot property in the past week. On Friday stars including Sienna Miller, Eddie Redmayne and Amy Adams turned out at W magazine's pre-awards event to party away any nerves about Sunday's ceremony.

Elsewhere in the City of Lights on Saturday was Michelle's fellow Best Actress nominee Claire Danes who was also enjoying the award season excitement. Claire and her husband Hugh Dancy stepped out for the first time since the birth of their son, Cyrus, who was welcomed into the world in December.

New-mum Claire, who wore a dark skirt and jacket for a dinner held by Showtime at The Chateau Marmont, earned the Golden Globe nomination thanks to her role as Carrie Mathison in Homeland. The crime thriller has enjoyed a great deal of award success in recent months, stealing the show at last year's Emmys by winning the three of the top awards: Best Drama, Best Actor in a Drama and Best Actress in a Drama which went to Claire.Claire and Michelle also face tough competition in their catagory from Glenn Close, Connie Briton and Juliana Margulies and the winner will be revealed during Sunday night's ceremony. The event which takes place the Beverly Hilton Hotel, is being hosted by comediennes Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Some of the high-profile presenters include  George Clooney and Jason Statham whose Parker co-star Jennifer Lopez will help to open one of those coveted golden envelopes. Other stars taking the stage include Meryl Streep, who doubtless will still have 2012's statue for The Iron Lady taking pride of place on the mantelpiece. This year, however, she will be giving instead of receiving awards. Actors Will Ferrell, Jennifer Garner, Les Miserables' Amanda Seyfried and Smash star Debra Messing complete the array of stars turning their hand at presenting.
