Messages of luck come in handy for Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck's daughter Violet wrote good luck messages that helped him at the Producers Guild Awards and now her handwritten wishes have worked their charm again. As he collected the top award at the Directors Guild Awards, Ben showed off the adorable words of encouragement written by the seven-year-old. "I love Papa. Good luck" was penned on the actor's right hand, much like the heart-adorned message he sported at last Saturday's ceremony. The heartfelt words were clear for all to see as Ben took to the stage to receive yet another accolade for Argo, the hostage thriller he directed, starred in and co-produced.

The film has come out on top multiple times this awards season, picking up two Critics Choice Awards, two Golden Globes and a Screen Actors Guild Award on top of the most recent honours from the Producers and Directors Guilds.

Modest Ben claimed in his speech "I don't think that this makes me a real director, but I think it means I'm on my way," But the 40-year-old did credit young Violet's message saying, "My daughter wrote on my hand for luck. "I don't know how that works, but I guess it worked, so you can look forward to seeing more of this!"Yet despite several nods from industry officials, and the usual correlation between a Directors Guild Award and the Oscars, Ben missed out on a Best Director nomination at the year's Academy Awards. The movie is a frontrunner to take the title of Best Motion Picture however and perhaps with some more words of luck from his children, the Pearl Harbour actor will be giving yet another acceptance speech on February 26.

Jennifer Garner

Ben's wife Jennifer Garner has been by her husband's side throughout his run of award ceremony success and Saturday night's bash at The Ray Dolby Ballroom in the Hollywood and Highland Centre was no exception. Jennifer looked as elegant as ever in a simple yet stylish white dress. The actress, who has three children with her husband Ben, wore subtle pink lipstick and her dark hair in an updo to reveal glittering drop earrings.

Girls director Lena Dunham also took home an award on Saturday as did Breaking Bad's Rian Johnson. Lena, who collected her plaque from screen star Helen Hunt, chose a bright pink and orange dress and nude heels for the occasion.

Lena's artist father Carroll Dunham was her guest for the night. Carroll proudly looked on as his daughter was recognised for her Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series, which follows the two Golden Globes she won at the beginning of the month.
