February 19, 2013

Tearful friends and family of Reeva Steenkamp have gathered at a private memorial ceremony in her home town of Port Elizabeth. Mourners arrived at the Victoria Park Crematorium to say their last goodbyes to the 29-year-old model as she was laid to rest, five days after she was so tragically killed.More than 500 miles away in Pretoria, her boyfriend, South African paralympian Oscar Pistorius was appearing in court for a bail hearing, following his arrest for her murder on Valentine's Day. During proceedings, details of the prosecution's case against him emerged.

The 26-year-old stands accused of Reeva's premeditated murder, and on Tuesday Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court how on the night of the killing, Oscar had got up, put on his prostheses, walked seven metres and fired his gun through the bathroom door of his home.

In response, his defense lawyer Barry Roux told the court his client did not know in advance who was behind the door. The athlete wept as his lawyer spoke, the BBC reports.

Earlier this week, relatives of Reeva spoke of their grief and demanded to know what happened on that fateful night. "All we want are answers… answers as to why this had to happen, why our beautiful daughter had to die like this," her devastated mother June told The Times of South Africa.
