March 21, 2013

At first glance, Geri Halliwell and Prince Philip seem an unlikely pair. But their love of animals brought them together at London Zoo this week as they attended the opening of a new £3.6million tiger enclosure. The former Spice Girl was on hand to watch as the Duke of Edinburgh - honorary patron of the Zoological Society of London - unveiled the Tiger Territory, home to Sumatran tigers Jae Jae, five and Melati, four.

Dressed in a cream mac, matching trousers and ankle boots, Geri was clearly in her element at the grand opening ceremony, beaming as she posed for pictures with the tigers and snapped some of her own for the family album. She also shared some photos from the day with her Twitter fans, one accompanied with the caption, "A prince, a tiger and a beehive, it's amazing what makes a girl happy."

Prince Philip, 91, seemed in equally high spirits at the event, jokingly declaring the enclosure closed moments after one of the big cats appeared inches from his legs - albeit behind the glass. The Tiger Territory is London Zoo's biggest investment since the creation of Gorilla Kingdom in 2007. Five times the size of the previous enclosure, it was created by the zoo's tiger keepers and conservationists and comes complete with heated rocks, elevated platforms and trees, and a 20ft pole.
