Katy Perry has spoken about the end of her 14-month marriage to Russell Brand, revealing that she has not spoken to her ex-husband since he texted her to ask for a divorce. "Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011," Katy told US Vogue. The couple announced their divorce in December 2011, citing irreconcilable differences.
In the candid interview, the Part of Me singer admitted she was very much in love with the British comedian during their marriage. "He's a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him," the 28-year-old explained.
Katy did reveal at times she felt to blame for the pair's split. "I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending," she said, before adding, "but then I found out the real truth, which I can't necessarily disclose." "I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day," she said. The singer's comments come just weeks after Russell opened up about the couple's marriage breakdown.
"Some of it’s the fame, but I think getting married is — you’ve got a whole other person that you’ve got to make as important as you," the 38-year-old revealed. However, Russell reflected on his marriage with fond memories for the Californian singer. "I tried it and I loved it. I really think she’s a lovely beautiful person," Russell told Esquire magazine.
Russell and Katy met in 2009, after the California-born singer admitted to throwing a bottle at the comedian's head at the MTV Music Awards after party. Russell asked her to marry him just four months later on New Year's Eve.
"I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends," Russell said in a statement in 2011 as the couple confirmed their separation. Since parting ways with the comedian, Katy Perry has been dating US singer John Mayer, while Russell has reportedly enjoyed spending time with Isabella Brewster, who he briefly dated before meeting Katy.
Katy is currently working on her new album, while Russell has just announced plans to embark on a new stand-up UK tour, with the comedian revealing stand-up will always be his first love. "It's not a dangling appendage of my celebrity," said Russell. "It's my absolute core. Really the only thing that actually makes me raw is stand-up. When I'm doing it, it's beautiful."
