The Prime Minister, who was among many famous faces in the Royal Box to witness Andy become the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936, had already fuelled speculation that the tennis star could be offered a knighthood. He said that Andy's victory had "lifted the spirits of the whole country" after he ended Britain's 77 year wait for a men's champion.Of an honour, the PM said on ITV's This Morning, "I can't think of anyone who deserves one more. "David took to Twitter to share his excitement at meeting the newly-crowned Wimbledon champion, writing ahead of the Number Ten celebrations, "I'm looking forward to welcoming #Wimbledon Champion @Andy_Murray to No10 this afternoon. Everyone here is excited to meet him."

Despite having had a little more than an hour's sleep after partying the night away at the traditional end-of-tournament Winner's Ball, Scotsman Andy soaked up the atmosphere, chatting and mingling with guests at Downing Street.

When asked if he was deserving of an accolade, Andy said: "I think it's a nice thing to have or be offered. "I think just because everyone's waited for such a long time for this, that's probably why it'll be suggested, but I don't know if it merits that. "The 26-year-old sports star beat world number one Novak Djokovic in three straight sets to take the title in a game that lasted a grueling three hours in searing temperatures.

He was willed on at Centre Court by the majority of the 15,000 spectators, with thousands more watching on the nearby big screen.
