The man, who is "known to German authorities", bypassed through the property's security system and managed to enter the villa.

The report described the suspect as "an unbalanced person" and reported that he had hoped to meet and speak to Italian-French Carla. "He could have hurt Mrs Sarkozy and her child, who were both in the house, but fortunately the security guards stopped him before it happened," a Sarkozy aide told the newspaper.

According to reports, Nicolas was not at home at the time of the intrusion and was informed a few days later. The incident might show Nicolas, who is the party figurehead for UMP, in a positive light. He has recently come under fire over the security costs of his summer holidays. An article entitled 'Sarkozy's highly-protected holidays' was published in Le Parisien earlier this week accusing him of using more bodyguards than his predecessors. While Nicolas continues his career in politics, 45-year-old Carla has returned to the fashion world. She recently shot her first major modelling campaign since her husband left office as the new face of Bulgari.

The holiday villa, located on the Var coast, near Le Lavandou, has been regular retreat for the Sarkozy family in recent years.
