Oprah Winfrey has revealed that she has no regrets about not becoming a mother. The 59-year-old chat show host, who has been with her long-term partner Stedman Graham for 27 years, said that she feels that she made the right choice in choosing her career over starting a family. "If I had kids, my kids would hate me," Oprah told The Hollywood Reporter. "They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would've probably been them."
Oprah also said that unlike her best friend Gayle King, said that she realised early on that she had other ambitions than becoming a mother. "Gayle [now a mother of two] was the kind of kid who, in seventh grade Home Economics class, was writing down her name and the names of her children," said Oprah. "While she was having those kind of daydreams, I was having daydreams about how I could be Martin Luther King."
Last month Oprah spoke to TV presenter Lorraine Kelly about why she and Stedman chose not to go down the traditional path of marriage."It's not because I never had time," she said. "If I wanted to get married, I could've made the time. "I'm not a traditional woman and I haven't had a traditional life, and I think that had Stedman and I gotten married, we certainly wouldn't have stayed married. "If you were to ask him, he would say the same thing… He's a pretty traditional man," she added. "I've taught him to be non-traditional. But the very idea of what it means to be a wife and the responsibility and sacrifice that carries - I wouldn't have held that very well."
