The couple, who have been dating for one year, couldn't hide their fondness for each other as they sat side by side at dinner. The American Hustle actor was pictured tenderly placing his hand on Suki's lap as they shared a joke and gazed at each other affectionately.

The pair chatted away to US secretary of state John Kerry before the decadent dinner, which had been held in honour of French president Francois Hollande. Bradley may have had the opportunity to practise his French on the politician given his fluency after studying in the south of France for six months.

Other celebrity guests in attendance included Anna Wintour and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, while Mary J Blige led the entertainment. The nine-time Grammy winner and close friend of the Obamas, who sang for Barack at the 2012 Democratic National Convention and reportedly attended Michelle's 50th birthday bash, had guests up and dancing after dinner.

The 300-strong guests were treated to a sumptuous dinner of dry-aged rib eye beef, oysters and blue cheese, chocolate-malted ganache and lavender shortbread cookies among other treats.

The state dinner was held in a pavilion tent on the White House South Lawn that had been dotted with French-inspired bouquets of flowers and vines.
