Prince Charles misses out on attempt to recreate Oscars selfie

March 13, 2014

Prince Charles is usually happy to pose for cameras but when it came to getting involved in an eight-man selfie, the cheerful royal graciously bowed out.

The first-in-line to the throne was attending the Prince's Trust Awards on Wednesday night and as he arrived, Charles stopped to greet other guests on the red carpet. Joan Collins was one of the famous faces making her entrance and couldn't resist a photo opportunity.

Grabbing a host of celebrities around her — including Pixie Lott, Vernon Kay, Sir Ben Kingsley, Jeremy Irons, Jools Holland, Luke Evans and Dominic West — Joan attempted to recreate Ellen DeGeneres' famous selfie taken at the Oscars.

Holding out her phone, Joan stood at the centre of the group as she reached out and tried to get as many faces in as possible. A few celebrities didn't quite make the cut — including Laura Whitmore, Tess Daly, Sam Bailey, Phillip Schofield and Anna Williamson — but happily went along with the shot.

""Selfie" support @PrincesTrust thx 2 @benkingsley @JeremyIrons @PixieLott @DominicWest @LukeEvans_ @News @VernonkayR1," Joan captioned the photo.Meanwhile, Prince Charles politely declined to get involved, and was seen sharing a joke and laughing with the Dynasty star before he moved on.

While Joan's selfie gained 349 retweets in almost one day, Ellen's epic snap became the most retweeted message on Twitter with over 3.3million retweets. The social media site temporarily crashed from the frenzy Ellen's post caused.

The comedian's star-studded photo, which was taken by Bradley Cooper, included the likes of Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Julia Roberts, Lupita Nyong'o and more. "If only Bradley's arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars," wrote Ellen alongside the snap.

The Prince's Trust Awards, which was held at the Odeon in Leicester Square, celebrated the achievements of young people who have triumphed in the face of extremely tough conditions, including homelessness and drug addiction.

Pregnant X Factor winner Sam Bailey took to the stage to perform on the night, while Phillip Schofield and Gok Wan were on hand to present awards to the youngsters.

Prince Charles founded charity The Prince's Trust in 1976, and the awards are in their tenth year.
