Fans have been given a first look at David Beckham's new BBC documentary, in which he visits the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.

Several new photos from the documentary show David visiting the Yanomami tribe and meeting their most prominent spokesperson Davi Kopenawa, who is known as the ‘Dalai Lama of the Rainforest’.

David spoke to Davi, the first-ever Yanomami shaman to have published a book, about the problems facing his tribe, including the illegal gold mining that has been taking place on their land.

"We liked David’s visit a lot because he was very interested in the problems in the Yanomami reserve," Davi's son Dario told Globo News. "He saw that there are many threats to the environment and to our culture. He showed he was concerned about the Yanomami people."

The documentary shows David and his close friend Dave Gardner explore the Brazillian rainforest in the run up to the 2014 World Cup.

Managing director of BBC Worldwide Helen Jackson said that those watching the show will get a unique view of the jungle via football star David. "This is an unforgettable documentary set in the heart of the dense Amazon rainforest following David Beckham," she said.

"Through his eyes, audiences will experience life in the jungle, something so distant from David's life on and off the pitch and in the glare of the world's media."
