Coachella 2014: Beyoncé's surprise appearance, plus highlights

April 14, 2014

Beyoncé Knowles made a surprise appearance at Coachella Music Festival 2014, joining her younger sister Solange on stage for the event’s first weekend. The star tried not to steal her singer sister’s thunder though by sticking to a dance routine instead of teaming up with her for vocals, but she didn’t fail to keep crowds entertained with her presence alone. Her unannounced arrival had fans in shock as the 32-year-old shimmied to Solange’s Losing You song and also partied at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.

Her 44-year-old husband Jay Z also stunned onlookers by teaming up with rapper Nas for Dead Presidents II. Nas, 40 - who used to be married to singer Kelis – clearly loves to catch his audience by surprise as he welcomed 44-year-old Puff Daddy to the stage during Hate Me Now.

Other celebrities at the event – which is repeated over two weekends included Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, who took a much-deserved break by leaving son Axl at home, who she has with actor spouse Josh Duhamel. Cara Delevigne was spotted sans actress girlfriend Michelle Rodriguez as she spend time in the United States to help sister Poppy celebrate her bachelorette party, before she weds James Cook.

Ellie Goulding at Coachella on Friday

Katy Perry, 29, took in the sights and sounds but refused to be sucked into the selfie craze, writing on Twitter that taking part in the fad was dangerous. Lorde warmed up the audience before Pharrell Williams did his set with Gwen Stefani and Snoop Dogg, featuring.

However dust storms, which plagued the event last year, failed to keep festival-goers rooted to the spot for the Happy hitmaker as well as Outkast who made their comeback at Coachella. Before scooting off to the MTV Awards, where she tore Zac Efron’s shirt off his back, Rita Ora partied with boyfriend DJ Calvin Harris and her pal Ellie Goulding, who performed on Friday.
