In 2007 Adele was named the BRIT Awards Critics Choice and in 2008 won the BBC Sound of 2008. Her first album, 19, was a critical and commercial success with tracks such as Hometown Glory and Chasing Pavements both becoming top ten singles.
But it was in 2011 when Adele's star went into the stratosphere, as her sophomore album, 21, was released.
The sleeper hit of the year, 21 became the UK’s bestselling album of the 21st century and was the longest running number one album by a female artist ever.
Inspired by heartbreak, Rolling In The Deep, Someone Like You, and Set Fire To The Rain would all go on to be international number ones and the album garnered Adele six Grammy awards and two BRIT awards.
Adele also became the first artist to ever sell more than 3million copies of an album in one year, and she became the first artist to have two top-five hits in both the UK and the US simultaneously.
In 2012 Adele recorded the theme tune to James Bond film, Skyfall, and subsequently gained her first Academy Award for Best Original Song.
The same year Adele gave birth to her first child with Simon Konecki, a little boy whose name was later revealed to be Angelo. Her heightened success led to intense criticism of her weight by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and comparisons to other British artists, to which Adele responded with: "We're a gender, not a genre".
