Rik Mayall has died aged 56. The comedian – best known for his work on programmes such as Bottom and The Young Ones with fellow actor Adrian Edmondson – passed away, confirmed Roger Davidson, his manager.

"It is a terrible shock. All we know at this stage is that Rik died at home. He touched many lives, and always for the better." said Roger.

However Rik suffered, it is thought his passing may be linked to a quad bike accident in 1998 where he was left in a coma for days. Rik leaves behind make-up artist wife Barbara Robbin – who he married in 1985. The couple had three children together, Rosie, 28, Sidney, 26, and Bonnie Mayall, 19.

Adrian – who is married to actress Jennifer Saunders -  said of the tragedy: "There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish b******"

Since his 1980s comedy shows, Rik has appeared in Jonathan Creek more recently and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Without his acting other half Rik has enjoyed stints on the theatre stage.
