Katy Perry is planning on lending her fame to support and raise money during her upcoming US tour for education.

"I'm an American girl that had a dream, executed a dream, came from nothing — and that really is the American dream," the Firework singer said.

"I'm happy to be that example and hopefully inspire other people to do that."

On Thursday she donated a $1million cheque to support teacher projects, and she's planning to ask her fans to support the "Make Roar Happen" initiative in raising as much money as possible on the tour dates.

Attendees can pick a project that they support and donate as little as $1.

Speaking of her fans, for whom many are still in full-time education, Katy said: "I'm aware that people look up to me, but I hope it's more an inspirational thing and not like, 'Katy Perry makes these decisions for herself, so therefore I'll make decisions based on those Katy Perry makes,' because that's not how anyone should live their life.

She added: "But I hope they're inspired by my hard work, my ambition, and my integrity."

"I really believe knowledge is power, especially for females," the pop star said in an interview with AP. "I feel like our education makes us more confident. [I] wasn't raised with a great education", Katy said, but she revealed that she know takes the time to seek out museums while touring.

"I thought, instead of shopping my way around the world, why not educate my way around the world?" she added.

The singer recently ended a string of dates in the UK and Europe, and a host of famous faces turned out to support her.

Adele took a sneaky snap with Katy backstage while Robert Pattinson, a close friend of Katy's, was also in attendance at one of the London dates.

Other celebs including Sam Smith, Nick Grimshaw and Jessie Ware all also danced and sang along to Katy's set list full of pop hits.
