Amy Adams surprised a US soldier when she gave up her first class seat for him on a recent flight. The Golden Globe winner, 39, discreetly swapped places and sat in his economy class seat for the five-hour journey from Detroit to Los Angeles. Amy, whose father was a serviceman and who had grown up moving from one military base to another with her family, hoped to keep her act of kindness unnoticed but fellow passengers were quick to praise her on social media.

Amy Adams grew up in a military family

"Just saw actress Amy Adams do something incredibly classy," wrote TV personality Jemele Hill on Twitter. "She gave her 1st class seat to an American soldier. I'm an even bigger fan now." Amy, who had been in Detroit filming Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice, had spotted the soldier at the gate and privately asked cabin crew staff to swap places, added Jemele. Lucky passenger Ernest Owens ended up sitting next to Amy for the duration of the flight in economy and shared a photo of himself and the five-time Oscar nominee.

"I didn't do it for attention for myself," Amy later told Inside Edition as she stepped off the plane. "I did it for attention for the troops." Amy was born in Vicenza, Italy, where her father was stationed at military base Caserma Ederle. The family-of-nine moved around the world but eventually settled in Castle Rock, Colorado when Amy was eight years old.
