Celine Dion has put her Las Vegas residency on hold and cancelled her remaining tour dates indefinitely to focus on her husband, René Angelil, as his health declines.

In a statement Celine said: "I want to devote every ounce of my strength and energy to my husband's healing, and to do so, it's important for me to dedicate this time to him and to our children."

Speaking to People magazine, Celine added: "I also want to apologize to all my fans everywhere, for inconveniencing them, and I thank them so much for their love and support." The couple, who share a 26-year age gap, went on their first date when Celine was 19 and René was 45.

The couple got engaged in 1991 and were married in 1994, in a lavish ceremony at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec. They have three children, 13-year-old René-Charles and twin boys Nelson and Eddy, who were born in 2011, following a sixth attempt at IVF.

René, 72, was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1999 and had a tumour removed from his throat in December 2013.

In March, Celine released a statement on René's health, revealing: "I want him to focus on getting back to 100 per cent. I've been doing my shows at the Colosseum and everything's under control."

"At home we’ve been spending a lot of quality time with the family. We feel very fortunate that we’ve been able to get the best care possible and we thank God every day helping us to get through this ordeal."

He stepped down as Celine's manager in June, with longtime friend and associate, Aldo Giampaolo, taking on the new role as CEO of Feeling Productions, the company in charge of the singer's career. In a statement, René said that he had appointed his "longtime close friend" with "great pleasure and the utmost confidence."
