Frank Lampard retires from international football

Frank Lampard has announced his retirement from international football. The 36-year-old England player, whose last match for his country was captaining his side against Costa Rica in the 2014 World Cup, released a statement through his management company. "It has been a very tough decision for me to make," said Frank. "That is why I have given it so much thought since the World Cup."

"I have always been exceptionally proud and honoured to represent my country and have to say looking back I have enjoyed every minute of wearing the England shirt," he said. Frank, who is currently on loan from New York City FC, added that his plans to move stateside were a major factor in deciding to end his international career. "Due to my club career now going in a different direction, it is of utmost importance for me to consider my family first and also to concentrate on how I can perform consistently to the best of my abilities over my next few years in club football," he added. The football star is proud dad to two daughters – Luna and Isla – who he had with his ex-fiancée Spanish model Elen Rivas. The pair were together for seven years after splitting up in 2008.

One year later, Frank started dating presenter Christine Bleakley, 35, and proposed to the Irish beauty in June 2011.

His announcement comes just a month after former England captain Steven Gerrard revealed in July that he was also retiring internationally. Frank added in his statement: "I feel very confident that with Roy Hodgson in charge, the young players that we have coming through, and the changes that are being made throughout the development of the youth system in this country, that we will have success in the future and a team that this country deserves."
