Niall Horan dusted off his travel card to take a rare trip on the London underground. The One Direction singer, 21, caused a social media frenzy when he shared a photo of himself travelling like the average commuter. "Tube selfie!" Niall captioned the Instagram picture, which showed members of the public standing in the background unaware of their famous fellow passenger.

The photo prompted immediate response from his fans – dubbed Directioners – who replied with comments such as "Cutieee" and "LOVE YOU". Niall is not the only band member who has been spotted taking London's iconic subterranean transport. Last year Harry Styles, 20, was snapped on the Tube as he made his way to Elton John's iTunes festival performance. Other famous singers who have caused excitement underground have included Jay Z and Chris Martin, who took the Tube last October when the rapper was on his way to perform at his Magna Carta Holy Grail tour.

Rihanna also caused quite a stir when she headed to rapper Drake's concert at the O2 Arena in Greenwich two years ago, travelling in hot pants, thigh-high leather boots and a flame printed T-shirt. The British royal family have also been known to venture onto the Tube, although in different circumstances. While the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, was expecting Prince George last year, she attended an event to celebrate the London Underground's 150th anniversary.

Kate, who has recently been out of the spotlight as she is suffering from severe morning sickness during her second pregnancy, joined The Queen and Prince Philip at Baker Street tube station for the commemorative affair. Kate admitted that travelling on the Tube was an element of her former life that she missed, and laughed when she was presented with a "Baby on Board" badge. The royal trio unveiled a plaque naming a new train "Queen Elizabeth II" and were also the first to venture on board to inspect the interior.
