'Thanks for a great night mate!' Wayne Rooney wrote to Ed Sheeran on Instagram

Regardless of Wayne's failed attempt, the Manchester United captain seems to have had a whale of a time hanging out with his 23-year-old singing idol. The striker had just attended Ed's sell-out tour in the northern city when he rocked up to the pub for the small after-party. "Brilliant time at Ed Sheeran concert last night. Thanks for a great night mate!" the footballer captioned a photo of the pair on Twitter and Instagram. Wayne's wife Coleen also took to the micro-blogging site to congratulate the hitmaker on his musical success. "Congratulations on your Number 1@edsheeran ..... Fantastic!!" she posted after hearing that his track Thinking Out Loud had topped the UK Official Singles Chart.

Last month, Ed's latest album X was reported as the best-selling album of 2014 so far. Speaking at the same time, Ed revealed the inspiration behind his Thinking Out Loud music video, which sees the red-haired singer taking over a ballroom dancefloor. "My original concept was to have a couple walk in and do some made ballroom dancing," he said. "At first I was going to get two talented dancers but as was the idea was formed, I thought hmm maybe I should have a crack at this. If rugby players can do it on Strictly Come Dancing then maybe I can too." West Yorkshire-born Ed added: "Dancing can be the most fun thing in the world but in the lead-up to finishing this video, I was so frustrated. I have never wanted to quit something so much. At some points, I felt like saying to the choreographers 'You do this, I'm going to stand in the background.'"
