Winners on the night included One Direction, Taylor Swift and Iggy Azalea, who also delivered a 'Booty'-licious end to the show with Jennifer Lopez. Taylor Swift played with fire – quite literally – as she opened the show with the world premiere of her new single Blank Space. The catchy number saw Taylor holding burning roses and making her suitors cower in fear as she worked the stage in a shimmering gold dress.
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez moved to tears
Selena Gomez cried as she performed her single The Heart Wants What It Wants – a song about her ex Justin Bieber – live on stage. A screen behind her showed a series of visuals, including thunderstorms, a sobbing woman and a silhouette that looked a lot like Justin.
Visibly touched by Selena's moving performance was her friend Taylor; as the camera cut to her at the end of the song, the star was seen with tears.
Sam Smith
Sam Smith wows the crowdSam Smith gave viewers goosebumps with his haunting rendition of hit track I'm Not The Only One, which included a rap verse from A$AP. The British star also picked up the prize for Favourite Pop/Rock Male Artist; his debut album In The Lonely Hour made records in the US this year, selling 166,000 copies in its first week of release.
One Direction
One Direction win big
One Direction continued their worldwide domination by scooping three coveted awards, including artist of the year. The five piece - named favourite band or group, and winners of the favourite album trophy – also treated fans to a performance on the night, taking to the stage to sing their latest single Night Changes. "This has been a real perfect day… America feels like a second home to us," Liam said as the boys collected the night's first award.
Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea

The two stars took to the stage in body-baring leotards to deliver a 'Booty'-licious rendition of their hit single, to the delight of the audience. It topped off a great night for Australian rapper Iggy, who picked up two awards at the ceremony – Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist, and Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop album.
