Turning a theatre awards ceremony into date night, Benedict Cumberbatch made his second ever public appearance with fiancée Sophie Hunter. The actor, who caused consternation among female fans with his recent engagement announcement in The Times, was on dapper form as the couple graced the red carpet.

He looked so pleased and proud to have Sophie, a successful actress and theatre director in her own right, by his side.Sophie lived up to the Sherlock star's description of her as "really cool", having picked out a striking red patterned floral Erdem dress, which she had accessorised with her engagement ring.

Homeland star Damian Lewis, who was recently awarded an OBE by Prince William, attended with his wife Helen McRory who is the mother of his two children. Other parents enjoying an evening out included Sienna Miller and fiancé Tom Sturridge, who left their toddler daughter Marlowe at home to have some fun.

Also enjoying couples night were Billie Piper and her husband Laurence Fox, who have two little boys together. Billie was up for Best Actress awards for her role in Great Britain but in the event she lost out to Gillian Anderson for her role in A Streetcar Named Desire.
Gillian, 46, floated up to collect her prize in an exquisite tiered black dress covered daisies.
