Tyra Banks is a global superstar, a former runway and Victoria's Secret model, and a TV personality who has hosted her own search for catwalk stars for over a decade. But growing up in California, Tyra found herself often teased over her appearance, with a regular nickname being "ugly duckling".
By the time Tyra had turned 15 though she gained her confidence and began modelling. By the age of 16, the youngster had moved to Europe where she was modelling in Milan and for her first Paris Fashion Week in 1991, she booked an amazing 25 shows.
Tyra became the first African-American woman to pose on the covers of GQ and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and in 1997 Tyra was offered the coveted position of a Victoria's Secret Angel. She remained a brand ambassador until 2005.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was where Tyra made her TV debut in the early 1990s, as an old friend of Will Smith's, and she went on to guest star in Felicity and All That.
In 2003 Tyra launched a new reality show, America's Next Top Model. The show became an instant success, and its name has lent itself to various international editions including Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model and Australia's Next Top Model.
A passionate philanthropist, Tyra founded the TZONE Foundation in 1999, a series of summer camps aimed at developing life skills in young girls. The foundation has now evolved into a charity, providing resources to other organisations across the US.
