The parents of Stephen Fry's partner Elliott Spencer have said they are "over the moon" about the couple's engagement. This week it was revealed that Stephen will marry Elliott, 30 years his junior, after a whirlwind romance, and Robert and Miranda Spencer confirmed they were delighted by the news. Speaking at their home in Southampton, Robert, 57, said, "We are obviously very happy. We are over the moon, that is all I want to say."

Stephen returned the compliment to Elliott's parents when he was spotted with his new fiancé outside his Piccadilly home in London home on Tuesday. The couple beamed – and showed off matching engagement rings – as they stopped to talk to the press following their big announcement.
"I have met them and they are very nice," the TV star said when asked about Mr and Mrs Spencer, as he and Elliott, 27, left the property together. "We are off to celebrate our engagement," Stephen, 57, revealed. "We won't be going abroad until after the BAFTAs," he added – next month, the QI star will host the prestigious ceremony for the 10th time.
The couple were also asked about their engagement rings, which they both wore on their wedding fingers. "They are very similar, both made of Rhodium and are almost matching," Stephen said.
He was less forthcoming when quizzed about the wedding date. "Now, we won't be giving that away," he said with a smile. "And I'm sorry to say you won't be invited. It will be some time this year, as you have to give a year’s notice." It appears that Stephen and Elliott got engaged shortly before Christmas: documents show that on 23 December they gave formal notice at a registry office in Dereham, Norfolk – near to where Stephen grew up.
The TV star confirmed the happy news on his Twitter account earlier on Tuesday. "Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag," he wrote. "I'm very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance! Thank you SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx."
