January 28, 2015

Bryan Ferry's son has been making a slow but sure recovery since his car crash before Christmas, and has now even made the small leap of walking his first steps since the serious three-car collision. A photograph of Merlin Ferry shows the 24-year-old up on his feet, leaning on a crutch for support as he makes his way along a hospital corridor. His brother Otis updated well-wishers by sharing the snap, with the accompanying caption: "Merlin's first steps after a month in QE hospital, Nothing like a delicious curry for motivation! Thank you to all x", on Twitter.

The family of former Roxy Music frontman Bryan have been overwhelmed by the support shown by fans since the accident, when Merlin was cut from the wreckage of his silver Volvo saloon by firefighters and suffered multiple fractures and a head injury. Earlier this month, Bryan posted a heartfelt message on Facebook, thanking all for "the kind messages of support". He also said a special thank you to "to the amazing emergency services provided by the Wellington Fire Service and West Midland Ambulance Service, together with the superb care and attention from all the medical staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham," who had all cared for his son. The accident took place on the A458 near Cressage, Shropshire. Wellington Fire Service tweeted a photo of the wreckage, and the remains of the Volvo Saloon in which Merlin was travelling.

"Crews worked hard for 45 mins to free the man which was a difficult extraction due to the impact involved," they added. "If you have any info contact 101." A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said at the time, "On arrival, crews found two cars that had suffered massive damage after a collision. The trapped man was in the first car. He suffered multiple fractures to his legs, pelvis, left arm and had a head injury. Shortly after the accident, Otis expressed his gratitude to the fire service, tweeting, "Thank you for extracting my brother alive from what looks like a mangled box of tin. We are all continuing to pray."
