Amal Clooney traded her red carpet gowns for lawyer's robes as she returned to work in Strasbourg, France on Wednesday. The 36-year-old, née Amal Alamuddin, will represent Armenia in a Genocide trial at the European Court of Human Rights.
Amal will represent the country in their case against Doğu Perinçek, the leader of the Turkish Workers' Party, who was convicted of denying the 1915 Armenian genocide in 2007. She will argue on an appeal before the court, which ruled in favour of Doğu in 2013.
The party leader claimed his right to free speech was violated when Swiss courts convicted him of denying the genocide.
The appeal is Amal's first big case of 2015, and the newlywed looked happy to be back at work as she prepared to face the court. No doubt keen to keep the attention on her work rather than her fame, Amal joked "I'm wearing Ede and Ravenscroft", when asked by journalists what designer she was wearing for the court appearance.
Amal's court outfit of traditional lawyer's robes was in stark contrast to the glamorous Dior Couture gown she wore when she joined her husband George Clooney at the Golden Globes in January.
The human rights lawyer was subject of a touching acceptance speech from her husband who declared that he felt "proud" to be with her.
"It's a humbling thing when you find someone to love, even better if you've been waiting your whole life," George said, as he accepted his lifetime achievement award. "Amal, whatever alchemy it is that brought us together, I couldn't be more proud to be your husband."
Golden Globes host Tina Fey had previously joked that it should be Amal who received the lifetime achievement award due to her exceptional career.
"George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year. Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case; was an adviser to Kofi Annan regarding Syria; and was selected for a three-person UN commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip. So tonight… her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award," she joked.
