Justin Bieber has apologised to his fans for what he termed his "arrogant" and "conceited" behaviour. The 20-year-old filmed the apology after an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres show about which he said he was "really nervous" after his controversial behaviour in the last 18 months.

"Today, I was on Ellen and it was a lot of fun. She's amazing, it was her birthday, but I was really nervous. I think I was nervous because I was afraid of what people are thinking about me right now," he says in the clip, which was posted online on Wednesday.

"It's been a minute since I've been in a public appearance, and I didn't want to come off arrogant or conceited or basically how I've been acting the past year-and-a-half."

The Baby singer went on to stress that his recent behaviour was not a true reflection of who he is.

"I'm not who I was pretending to be. Why I say I was 'pretending' is often we pretend to be something we're not as a cover-up of what we are truly feeling inside," Justin said. "And there were a lot of feelings going on in there. Just being young and growing up in this business is hard. Just growing up in general is hard."

Justin's video follows a tumultuous year which saw him arrested for driving under the influence and drag racing, and also splitting from his on-off girlfriend Selena Gomez. Despite not previously addressing his behaviour, the pop star went on to say that he does care what people think about him.

"I'm a person who genuinely cares. And although what's happened in the past has happened, I just want to make the best impression on people and be kind and loving and gentle and soft.

"And although people can call me a 'softy', that's how my mom raised me."

Justin, who is currently the face of Calvin Klein, will appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday.
