Cristiano Ronaldo has become one of the world's most revered and celebrated footballers, yet his early life began in what he called poverty, sharing a room in Portugal with his siblings, and growing up in a staunch Cathlolic household.

After being expelled from school at age 14, Cristiano and his mother agreed that he would focus his time and energy into becoming a footballer – and by 2002 and the age of 17, he had joined Manchester United football club as their first ever Portuguese player.

Taking on the number seven shirt as worn by the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham – placed extra pressure on the young footballer but Cristiano saw it as a source of motivation. By 2008, he had won the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year awards, and the following year he signed for Real Madrid in Spain for £80million – becoming the most expensive footballer in history.

The money proved just how invaluable Cristiano had become to the world of football, and he went on to win the FIFA Ballon d'Or again in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

The 30-year-old has spent his entire career at two of the world's best football clubs, and in total has contributed towards three Premier Leagues, one FA Cup, two UEFA Champions Leagues, one UEFA Super Cup and two FIFA Club World Cups for Portugal, of which he is the Captain.

His good looks, impressive stats, and dedicated workout regime mean that alongside football, Cristiano is also considered a fashion icon. In 2006 he opened CR7, a fashion boutique on the island of Madeira, where he grew up.

The brand has grown over the years, and since 2013 Cristiano has co-designed a range of underwear for men, of which the Spring/Summer 2015 range was recently launched.

In 2010 Cristiano became a father for the first time to a little boy, whom he also named Cristiano. Cristiano never revealed the identity of the boy's mother and maintains full custody of his son.

The same year Cristiano met Russian model Irina Shayk, reportedly through their work together on an Armani camapign. The pair, who were rarely photographed together at major events, announced in 2015 that they had recently decided to part ways.
