Sam Smith has opened up about the man he fell in love with who inspired several of his chart-topping songs. The mystery man is believed to be Sam's manager, music executive Elvin Smith, according to new reports.
Winning four awards at the Grammys earlier this month, Sam made headlines when he spoke about his past love during an acceptance speech.
"Thank you so much for breaking my heart," said the singer as he won Record of the Year. "Because now I've got four Grammys."
Sam Smith is said to have penned Stay With Me about his unrequited love
Sam revealed to The Sun that he has now moved on and remains on good terms with his manager – who is married and straight and didn't share his prodigy's feelings.
"I feel nothing towards him now," confessed the singer. "I'll always love him but I'm not in love with him anymore. I definitely don't crease on the floor in pain anymore."
The Stay With Me star admitted: "I was the only one in the relationship. It was in my mind and was something I had to get over. I also made the record so that this doesn't happen again. I don't want to fall in love again with someone who doesn't love me back."
Sam Smith said of his unrequited love: 'I know he loved me too, but not in that way'
"It’s really tough to explain," he added. "But no, he's not gay. Nothing ever happened between us. I know he loved me too, but not in that way."
Elvin has continued to support Sam, recently taking to Twitter to congratulate the 22-year-old singer on his epic Grammy wins and encouraging members of the public to vote for him at the upcoming BRITs.
Sam and Elvin first met in 2008 after the singer opened for Adele at Shepherd's Bush Empire. Sam's career has turned around in the past year, with the crooner admitting that at the 2014 Grammys he hadn't found fame yet.
"I did the red carpet and no-one knew who I was," Sam told Ellen DeGeneres. "It's all very weird. My life's changed."
Sam Smith briefly dated Jonathan Zeizel but the pair split after two months
He also commented about his brief relationship with his ex-boyfriend Jonathan Zeizel, with whom he broke up after two months. "I couldn't bring out In The Lonely Hour and go to the Grammys with someone, I had to be lonely for the Grammys," joked Sam. "I've just got to make sure my next boyfriend can polish my Grammys for me!"
Apart from Record of the Year, Sam won Song of the Year for Stay With Me and Best Pop Vocal Album for In The Lonely Hour. He also received the Best New Artist award.
